The one decision that drives everything else
Almost every veneers question — cost, number of visits, how long it lasts, whether we remove enamel — comes back to a single fork: porcelain or composite. Here's the honest comparison, so you walk into your preview already knowing which one your case is pointing at.
Porcelain veneers
Thin, custom ceramic shells bonded to the front of each tooth, made by a dental lab from a digital scan. They reflect light like natural enamel, resist coffee and wine stain, and last 10–15+ years. This is the choice for reshaping the whole visible smile line or for a result that has to hold up on camera. Two visits, about $950–$1,400 per tooth, and typically about 0.5 mm of enamel removed (though minimal-prep options exist for the right case).
Composite veneers
Tooth-colored resin hand-sculpted directly onto the tooth in one visit — no lab, no temporaries. Roughly half the cost of porcelain (~$400–$700 per tooth), additive (little to no enamel removed), and easy to repair or adjust. The trade-off: it stains over time and usually lasts 5–7 years before it wants a refresh. Great for one chipped tooth, a budget-conscious refresh, or "trying the look" before committing to porcelain.
The move we make more than any other: talk you out of a full set. Very often the smile you want is whitening plus one or two bonded teeth — not eight veneers. What the veneer process looks like
No tooth gets touched until you approve the smile
The part patients fear — "what if I don't like them?" — is exactly the part we solve up front. You see and sign off on the shape, length, and shade digitally before any prep. Here's the sequence for a porcelain case; composite collapses steps 2–4 into a single chairside visit.

Prep & precise temporaries
At the first working visit we prepare the teeth (about 0.5 mm, or less for minimal-prep cases), take a final scan for the lab, and place temporaries built to the approved design — so you test-drive the look in real life for a couple of weeks.
Lab crafts the veneers
A ceramist builds each veneer to the approved shape and shade — layering translucency at the edges so they catch light like enamel, not like a flat white tile. This is the two-to-three-week gap between visits, and it's where porcelain earns its longevity.
Bond & fine-tune
We try in the finished veneers, check them in natural light and against your face, adjust the bite, and bond them permanently. You leave with the smile you approved on day one — now in ceramic that lasts over a decade.
Are veneers right for you?
Great candidates — and when we say wait
Veneers are a cosmetic tool, not a cure-all. Where they shine, and where we'll steer you somewhere better first:
- Best for: permanent stains that won't whiten, chips and worn edges, small gaps, mildly crooked or uneven teeth, and teeth that are the wrong shape or too short for the smile line.
- Whiten or straighten first when we can. If whitening or Invisalign gets you 90% of the way there without removing enamel, that's the healthier, cheaper path — and we'll recommend it even though it's a smaller ticket.
- Grinding & clenching matter here. Arizona's dry-air night grinding cracks veneers if it's not managed. If you grind, we plan a nightguard into the case — non-negotiable, because it's what protects a five-figure smile.
- Gum health comes first. Veneers bonded to inflamed gums look wrong within a year. Active gum disease or heavy decay gets treated before we design anything cosmetic.

Do veneers ruin your natural teeth?
Traditional porcelain veneers require removing about 0.5 mm of enamel — a permanent change, which is why we never rush the decision. But not every case needs that: for teeth that are small or worn we can often place "no-prep" or minimal-prep veneers that remove little to no enamel and are reversible. Composite veneers are additive — the resin bonds on top, so the tooth underneath is untouched. We'll always show you the least-invasive option that gets the result you want, and if whitening or bonding gets you there without veneers, we'll say so.
Should I whiten my teeth before getting veneers?
Yes — if you're only doing a few veneers and keeping your other natural teeth, whiten first. Veneers are made to a fixed shade and don't respond to whitening gel, so we match the porcelain to your teeth after they're at their brightest. Whiten, wait about two weeks for the shade to stabilize, then we shade-match the veneers. How long do veneers take, and how many visits?
