What to do right now, by type of emergency
What you do in the first few minutes often decides whether a tooth is saved — especially a knocked-out permanent tooth. Find your situation below, take the first step, then call 480-840-1101 and we'll walk you through the rest while you head in.
Knocked-out permanent tooth
The true emergency — act within 30–60 minutes. Hold the tooth by the white crown, not the root. Rinse gently with milk or saline (no scrubbing). If you can, place it back in the socket and have your child bite on a clean cloth; if not, put it in a cup of cold milk — never water. Call us and drive in.
Knocked-out baby tooth
Do not try to put a baby tooth back — re-inserting it can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. Control any bleeding with gentle pressure from clean gauze, offer a cold compress for swelling, and call the same day so we can check for root fragments and make sure the adult tooth is safe.
Chipped or broken tooth
Save any broken piece in milk — we can sometimes bond the original fragment back. Rinse the mouth with warm water, use a cold compress for swelling, and give age-appropriate children's pain reliever. A large chip that bleeds from the tooth or exposes a pink inner layer needs same-day care to protect the nerve.
Toothache, swelling, or a gum bump
Rinse with warm salt water and give children's pain reliever (avoid placing aspirin on the gum). Facial swelling, a fever with tooth pain, or a pimple-like bump on the gum can signal an infection — those need a same-day visit. An emergency is the worst possible time for a frightening dental visit — a bad one can turn a one-time injury into years of dental fear. So in a kids' emergency we do the opposite of rushing: we slow the room down, narrate every step, and keep a parent within arm's reach the whole time.
First slot of the day

A knocked-out permanent (adult) tooth is a true emergency and the clock matters — the best outcomes happen within 30–60 minutes. My child has a bad toothache but no visible injury — is that an emergency?
A toothache that keeps a child up at night, comes with a fever, or shows facial swelling should be seen the same day — those can signal an infection (abscess) that won't resolve on its own. We accept every major PPO in Arizona — Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, United Concordia, BCBS, Ameritas, Guardian, Principal — and most emergency exams plus X-rays are a covered benefit. For uninsured families, the new-patient emergency exam + X-rays is $89 per child, and we'll give you the treatment cost in writing before we do anything beyond the exam. AHCCCS-only families: we're not currently in-network for Medicaid, but we'll still take the emergency call, coach you through first aid, and point you to a nearby AHCCCS pediatric office if that's the better fit.
